This is a list of the drives that are DIRECTLY supported by Hard Disk ToolKitª. The program will support most other SCSI and IDE devices, but it may not be able to exploit all of their capabilities.

Notes and Warnings: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY !

1) Generically supported drives default to non-blind data transfers and 255 maxchunk for safety reasons. Use Configure Driver to enable Blind data transfers if the device supports them.

2) When using drives on Macintoshes with 3rd party accelerators, blind transfers may not function correctly. The drive should be operated with blind transfers off in Configure Driver. (This happens a lot on the Macintosh Plus, because the SCSI hardware does not support handshaking.)

3) When connecting a drive that had not been used with a Mac, make SURE the following settings are correct, if available: 

Parity = Off, Synchronous Negotiation = Off, Wait Spin = Off, Unit Attention = Disabled, Spindle Sync. = Disabled, and Terminator Power is supplied by the drive to the SCSI bus.

4) Some Conner and Rodime drives need small maxchunk values. Also, they may need to operate with Blind Transfers disabled. These settings should not be changed in Configure Driver.

5) Because of Quantum firmware design, the Quantum LP52S and LP105S should not have Minimum Prefetch, in Mode Page 8, set to any value other than ZERO, as random crashes can occur.

6) Quantum Q250 and Q280 drives should have DELDIS, Mode Page 39, enabled, as data transfer errors can occur.

7) Older Seagate drives, prior to the Barracuda series (ST12550) circa 6/94, should not have the WCE (Write Cache Enable) bit, in Mode Page 8 enabled, as hangs could occur.

8) The Insite I325VM and IOMEGA Io20S must be used with FWB Toolsª. Failure to do so will prevent writing and formatting of floptical disks.

9) Micropolis 2210AV and 2217AV drives have known firmware quirks, if their revisions are VX08 or earlier. The quirks will cause erratic drive operation under certain circumstances. Updated firmware will be available at the end of March 1994, contact your supplier or Micropolis at 818-709-3300 for details.

10) Disconnects may not be supported properly on Seagate ST5660N and Conner CFA270S & CFA540S. Allow Disconnect may be turned off for these drives in Configure Driver, if problems are encountered.

11) The Western Digital AC21200H and AC31600H can not be used with a PIO mode greater than 0 on a Quadra 630. These devices seem to be able to use higher PIO modes on other Macintoshes.

12) Macintosh Quadra/Performa 630 Family and LC 575 Owners: The following device is not usable on your system: Seagate ST51080A. Please return it to your reseller and exchange it for another IDE hard disk.

13) This device is not usable on current released Macintoshes: Samsung STG-3127A. Please return it to your reseller and exchange it for another IDE hard disk.

14) Macintosh Performa 6360/54xx/64xx, SuperMac C Series, Motorola StarMax, and Power Computing PowerBase Owners: Maxtor AP series ATA-2 drives do not work on these machines. Please return it to your reseller and exchange it for another IDE or ATA-2 hard disk.
